Your Observatory is governed by a Non-profit Corporation
The John J. McCarthy Observatory Corporation, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, oversees the facility and operations of the Observatory. The Board consists of 12 members, and includes and Executive Committee of 6 members. Board members include community leaders, school board members past and present, technical advisers, teachers, and volunteers.
The observatory is closely related to the Board of Education, and operates under a document of understanding with that Board. The observatory officers include a Chairman, President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and CTO. Board terms are three years, with no limit on extension.
As a non-profit, the Corporation is also registered with the State of Connecticut for slaes tax exemption.
All donations to the observatory are tax-exempt.
